Kammenstraat (Antwerp): permit requested & neighbourhood information moment

LIFE has applied for the permit in Antwerp to redevelop the buildings of the Van Noten family, known for decades as the fashion store ‘t Meuleken. The site, which was purchased last year, is located next to Dries Van Noten’s fashion palace and the commercial first floor was set up by LIFE as a 2nd hand pop-up shop in collaboration with Oxfam and Kringwinkel.

The cluster of buildings between the Kammenstraat, Gierstraat and Steenhouwersvest will be maximally preserved and redeveloped to a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. Binst’s design provides four commercial units for a total of 890 m² and a plinth with catering (91 m²) and a single-family house on the Vrijdagmarkt side. The upper floors will contain four apartments and a coliving with 94 units and community amenities, including a wellness and fitness. The interior area will be pitted and have three patios.

No concrete tenants are being named for the commerce portion, but the units will be fitted out with stores for personal equipment. Talks are ongoing with Antwerp fashion designer Tim Van Steenbergen for an “in flow” concept with training.
